The world’s best bars for 2024 announced

A stylish two-story speakeasy in Mexico City’s trendy Colonia Juarez neighborhood has been crowned the world’s best bar. Handshake Speakeasy snagged the top spot last night in Madrid at the glitzy World’s 50 Best awards ceremony.

This is a massive win for a bar that only opened its (downstairs) doors in 2023. Handshake Speakeasy jumped from third place last year to clinch the title.

A fresh face stole second place: Hong Kong’s Bar Leone, an Italian-style gem championing “cocktail populari” (cocktails for the people), clinched Asia’s best bar title. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s Sips, last year’s top spot, slid into third. This 33-seat wonder, opened in 2021, boasts serious star power—one owner honed his skills at the famed El Bulli and the other at London’s award-winning Artesian.

The rest of the elite list saw mixologists and bar owners flocking from far-flung places like Athens, Tokyo, Sydney, and Lima.

World’s 50 Best Bars voters, a blend of bartenders and drinks writers, describe the list as “a snapshot of the opinions and experiences of 700 bar industry experts across the globe,” with no rigid criteria, only personal judgment.

The Garbage Truck

One day, I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded and missed the other car by just inches!

The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. I mean, he was really friendly.

So I asked, ‘Why did you just do that? This guy could almost ruin your car and sent us to the hospital!’

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, ‘Law of the Garbage Truck’

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointments. As and when their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you.

Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.

Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets… So Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don’t.

LIKE SO MANY of us, at one time James wasn’t really living the life he so longed for. He was just going through the motions, day-in and day-out. However, James was fortunate enough to have been introduced into the field of personal development in his 20’s. It was here that he began his journey of self-discovery, a journey overgrown with the difficulties of the lessons of his past.

The path James chose, has constantly challenged him, forced him to make sacrifice’s, and caused him to grow. A path which has taken him to new heights.

He has been a student and a teacher in the field of human behavior for over two-decades. His studies have led him to read over 400 books in the area of psychology, sociology, human behavior and self-help. He is a licensed practitioner in the science of Neuro-Linguistics and a certified Strategic Coach.

James is an avid outdoors enthusiast who enjoys, biking, hiking, scuba diving, beaches everywhere and travel. He has lived in Berlin, Germany; Istanbul, Turkey; and Vicenza, Italy. He has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Fiji.
