Leh, Ladakh–Little piece of Heaven

The roof of the world, the land of the lamas, LEH, LADAKH– India’s cold desert amidst the majestic Himalayas, has some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth. Situated at the  northern tip of the country and nestled at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level,  the small and bustling town of Leh is one of the highest habitable places is the world. Ladakh is nature in all its glory and the beauty is awe inspiring.

bikes

The Road to Leh is legendary and traverses through some of the highest passes in the world within the Himalayan range. The rugged beauty all around, it’s winding roads, blue rivers and green valleys, skies that create drama with ever changing weather, sunrise and sunsets creating an array of colors, monasteries hanging off cliffs, will draw you into a trance. Words can barely do justice to describe this magical place and the records stand testament. Lonely Planet has rated Ladakh one of the Top 5 destinations in the world for photography.

Two of the must see places in Ladakh are Pangong Tso and Nubra Valley. These locales are close to heaven on earth. En route Pangong you will see breath-taking panoramic views and the first sight of Pangong Tso is unforgettable. It’s a pristine blue saline lake, 125 KM long and by the hour the water takes on the color of the sky. The cloud formations on the mountains create stunning shadows and water holds the reflections of the surroundings. The lake is completely frozen in the winters and is a sight out of a fairy tale.  Nature’s miracles are bewildering and Pangong Tso is one of them.

On the way to Nubra Valley you drive through the Khardungala Pass, the highest motorable road in the world at 18380 feet above sea level. It’s an exhilarating experience to be at such high altitudes; the air is thin and crisp and makes you literally feel “On top of the world”.  Nubra valley is a desert with sand dunes, two humped camels and the flowing river cuts through the mountains. Taking a fun camel ride across a high altitude cold desert, where else in the world can you do that? An oasis called Hunder in the midst of the desert houses nature camps where you can experience wilderness, peace and quiet.

Also known as Little Tibet, Ladakh boasts of a rich and ancient culture where Buddhism is prevalent as a religion. Some of the Buddhist monasteries are centuries old and are situated at the most stunning locations, usually at the edge of cliffs creating a surreal feeling. The architecture of the monasteries is unique and the murals on the walls are beautiful works of art.  A feeling of divinity sets in when you see the monks during their prayer session.  Leh is an abode of Dalai Lama and he spends few months of the year in Ladakh preaching Buddhism.  The monasteries host festivals each year to showcase their culture, tradition and the local artifacts. These festivals are marked by colourful dancers with masks, local folk music and food.

Ladakh has something unique to offer to all kind of tourists and does not fall behind on the adventure quotient.  The land of bikers – its every ardent biker’s dream to ride their mean machines on the highest, most rugged and picturesque roads in the world. The adventurous riders travel more than 300Miles to get to Leh and ride within Ladakh to Pangong, Nubra and many other unexplored destinations equipped with their camping gear. Bikers from across the world come to Ladakh just to experience this high.

Rafting the Zanskar and Indus rivers with views of the hills in the backdrop is an adrenaline rush. This is one of the most famous and sought after rafting destinations in Asia and the rafting tours can range from 3 hours to 16 days where rafters travel downstream, camp and stop to explore the terrain and the varied landscape.  It is a trekker’s paradise as well and the trek to the Stok Kangri summit at 20,182 feet is a dream climb and is known to be achievable by amateur mountaineers as well.

Ladakhi people are extremely warm and hospitable and they live a life of simplicity and honesty driven by the Buddhist way of life.  The food has a Tibetan influence as well and you can try the local cuisine at some of the lovely restaurants in Leh town.  The locals play a lot of competitive Ice Hockey in winters and Polo in summers. These sports are very unique to this region due to the climate and terrain.

Finalists announced for The Man Booker International Prize 2015

bookers

The Man Booker International Prize recognises one writer for his or her achievement in fiction.  Worth £60,000 to the winner, the prize is awarded every two years to a living author who has published fiction either originally in English or whose work is generally available in translation in the English language.
The ten authors under consideration for this 2015 prize are:

  • César Aira (Argentina)
  • Hoda Barakat (Lebanon)
  • Maryse Condé (Guadeloupe)
  • Mia Couto (Mozambique)
  • Amitav Ghosh (India)
  • Fanny Howe (United States of America)
  • Ibrahim al-Koni (Libya)
  • László Krasznahorkai (Hungary)
  • Alain Mabanckou (Republic of Congo)
  • Marlene van Niekerk (South Africa)

The finalists were announced at the University of Cape Town in South Africa by the chair of judges, Professor Marina Warner, who commented:
‘The judges have had an exhilarating experience reading for this prize; we have ranged across the world and entered the vision of writers who offer an extraordinary variety of experiences. Fiction can enlarge the world for us all and stretch our understanding and our sympathy. The novel today is in fine form: as a field of inquiry, a tribunal of history, a map of the heart, a probe of the psyche, a stimulus to thought, a well of pleasure and a laboratory of language. Truly, we feel closer to the tree of knowledge.’
Previous winners have been Lydia Davis (2013), Philip Roth (2011), Alice Munro (2009), Chinua Achebe (2007) and Ismail Kadare (2005).

The 2015 winner will be announced in London on 19 May.

Arabian Morning Oatmeal

This is interesting

Samia's avatarRecipe and Story

20150318_092018_HDR

Adding flavors and ingredients is the best thing you can do with your morning oatmeal. My cousin suggested making oatmeal with nutmeg and chopped dates (mixed & cooked with it rather than added on top). I liked the idea and decided to go on and create a new flavored oatmeal. Then I thought about adding more flavors to it like cardamom, saffron and ground ginger.

Now talking about the name, when I decided to add the above flavors, this name directly came to my mind. Why? Well, cardamom is significantly used as a spice to flavor traditional sweets and beverages like Coffee and tea in the Middle East, and having a bowl of oatmeal full of rich aroma especially cardamom and the other flavors reminded me of drinking flavored Arabic coffee with a piece of Basbousa, so I thought of calling this dish “Arabian Morning Oatmeal”!

Hidden Gem.. really .. if you disagree.. read more than 200 positive reviews and more than 400 votes.
After long time I have seen such a peaceful place to eat. ( because there is no Bar ) Each nick and corner is decorated with passion and tastefully. Seating is comfortable and staff is humble and attentive.
They serve not only Italian but also serve Chinese, Mexican and Indian. I ordered several veg dishes and surprised with the authenticity of the taste.

Restaurant Review: Dunkin’ Donuts Vasant Vihar, New Delhi – 3.5/5 Star

010 (2)

Not really a fan of any Dunkin Donuts 🙂

The chained stores of Dunkin’ Donuts’ has great-tasting food and beverages, they include a wide variety of hot and iced coffee, teas, shakes, frozen drinks, lattes and cappuccinos. They do add drops of liquid flavors. These add calories to the drink.
Clean restaurant and attentive staff serves you with a friendly smile. You can sit enjoying your coffee and no one will bother you.
Ordered Spicy veg Burger and Chef’s Special veg Burger. Both were good but not  as great as I was expecting. Latte was not at par with CCD or Starbucks .
Got 2 Donuts free on my order 🙂 and both were fresh and really tasty & soft. ( Death by Chocolate and Bav Crm Chocolate)

Restaurant Review: Hong Kong Express, Dwarka, New Delhi – 4/5 Star

Ok, another Chinese outlet with big expectations 🙂

Its a small but neat and clean outlet basically for home delivery with Hardly 6-8 seating capacity.
Dishes are just wow, but you cant call them truly authentic Chinese.. 🙂
Great taste  and value for money. Portion size more then enough.
Service is very polite and personal.
Spicy Lemon Coriander Soup was good but not as great as recommended by the person taking orders.  You can easily avoid this and go for normal Tomato or any other variants .
Singapore style veg noodles  which were really tasty and perfectly cooked with lots of vegetables. After long time I had such delicious noodles.
Crispy Honey Chilli Potato were perfectly crispy, with lots of honey and sesames. But Chilli was missing. I pointed out this to the person at counter.

Over all good experience. Still lots of things on menu which I found interesting. Will try next time.

Suggestion :
Lots of flies. Install air curtain.
